Spurious Hypocalcemia And The Use Of MRI Contrast Agents:
A Clinical Analysis And Economic Model
    By Michael Glinski

  • When I presented this white paper to almost 300 people at Schering Berlex's national sales meeting, sales representatives thanked me for being the first to connect clinical eventualities to economic outcomes.
  • A powerpoint presentation was built for reps to use in presenting this material to radiologists.
  • In the workshops, reps invested 1.5 hours learning how to best use the paper as a selling tool.
  • In a February, 2005 Multidisciplinary Advisory Board conducted by Berlex, this paper was the first on the agenda, and was rated second-highest overall in how well it supported clinical and economic impact of spurious hypocalcemia, second only to work from Martin Prince, MD, PhD et al  from Cornell University, studying data from 1049 MR imaging exams.
  • HealthHelp is distributing the paper as an educational tool to the thousands of members of its imaging network.
  • Plans are under way to submit the paper for publication, possible in the journal Medical Economics.
  • The structure of the paper, and specifically the economic model, is all my original work, after being termed unmanageable by some senior-level radiologists.  The other authors contributed information about the clinical eventualities.  I also created all the graphics, spreadsheets, and workflow diagrams, and, due to short deadlines, did the final editing, proofreading, and supervision of print production.
  • The powerpoint file contains a control panel I built of manipulable values so investigators can interactively test various scenarios and instantly see the results.
  • Berlex has requested a second white paper, currently in preparation, addressing the implications specifically in the outpatient setting.

An on-line program that collects and reports on assessment data from providers of imaging services.

  • Rather than require highly-skilled people to collect and interpret the responses, I developed a method of presenting questions and analyzing the answers such that numerical values are derived to make comparisons of the overall quality of the equipment, personnel, and policies of the imaging providers.
  • The information will be used to identify weak providers, for planning education programs to gain overall improvements in performance, to assist the health plan in preparing for contracting negotiations with providers, and to provide guidelines for tiered contracting.
  • The program has been presented CMS, who has included the approach in a set of recommendations to Congress.
